Susan Sample

Susan Sample, PhD, MFA, teaches and researches the uses of narrative and writing in medicine.  She holds a unique position that bridges the university.  As assistant professor in the medical school’s Program in Medical Ethics and Humanities, Susan teaches reflective writing to medical students, facilitates a monthly Resident Writing Group, and serves as faculty advisor for both the medical student literary journal, Rubor, and the Physicians Literature and Medicine Discussion Group.  At Huntsman Cancer Institute, Susan is the first Writer-in-Residence.  A published poet, she offers creative writing workshops and individual consultations for patients, family members, and caregivers, as well as physicians and staff.  Susan also is an associate instructor in the Department of Writing and Rhetoric Studies in the U College of Humanities where she developed a community engaged writing course for upper-level undergraduates who plan to become health-care professionals.
